Dermatitis is a condition that affects the skin. It is a condition that is said to be cot dangerous and not contagious but those who get it usually feel quite uncomfortable. The condition usually comes up when the skin contacts something.

The skin then reacts and becomes sore, red or inflamed. The two most common types of dermatitis are irritant dermatitis and allergic dermatitis. Irritant dermatitis is the one that affects most people and it comes when the skin gets into contact with a substance that irritates it.

There are so many things that can lead to irritant dermatitis. One does not have to be affected immediately he comes in to contact with the irritant. The reaction can take place after a long period of often contact with the irritant.

For irritant dermatitis to occur, one has to be in contact with acids, alkaline substances, chemicals and other substances such as cleaning detergents. When these substances react with the skin, they usually lead to something that looks like a burn on the skin.

As for allergic dermatitis it usually comes when someone is exposed to a substance that he has become very sensitive to over time. The sensitivity is what is usually referred to as an allergy.

There are a lot of substances that someone can be allergic to. You cannot say for sure that something is an allergen because it may affect one but not the other. The allergens usually cause a reaction immediately but there are cases where the reaction takes a while to occur.

There is also contact dermatitis that occurs when one touches something. This usually affects the hands. There are some products that might be cause of dermatitis but only cause a reaction when the skin is exposed to light.

Most of these products are those that are used on the skin such as shaving creams, ointments, perfumes and other substances. When one is affected by allergen dermatitis, the symptoms can start to show immediately. They can also show over a period of time such as after a few weeks.

The most common symptom that one can use to tell that they are being affected by dermatitis is itching that affects the skin in that area. For allergic dermatitis, the itching is always more severe than for irritant dermatitis. Irritant dermatitis always leaves a dry, rough or red skin.

Most cases of dermatitis can be treated by washing the skin with a lot of water. Sometimes, when one is infected, he is advised not to do anything with the area and just wait for it to heal. People should try as much as they can to stay away from substances that they know are irritants. They should always have moisturizer with them wherever they go.

This is because moisturizer can help prevent the occurrence of dermatitis and it can also help relieve the affected area. When dermatitis cases are severe, patients are usually needed to go to a health care facility so that they can obtain proper medical care and so that they can be advised on what to do so as to avoid the conditions again.
